The Faculty of Dentistry at The University of Hong Kong is the premier dental school in Southeast Asia and the only institution in Hong Kong that provides undergraduate and postgraduate dental degrees.

The Dental Council of Hong Kong is established under the Dentists Registration Ordinance, Chapter 156, Laws of Hong Kong. It provides for the registration and regulation of the dental profession in order to protect patients, foster ethical conduct, and develop and upkeep the ethical standard of the profession. The Dental Council is responsible for the registration of dentists, the conduct of the Licensing Examination, the maintenance of ethics, professional standards and discipline of the profession.

The subsidiary legislation, Ancillary Dental workers (Dental Hygienists) Regulations, of the Dentists Registration Ordinance empowers the Council to provide enrolment and regulation of the dental hygienist. A roll of enroled dental hygienists is maintained by the Council.

From 7 April 2000 onwards, the form for stating the particulars of directors or managers or persons who perform dental operations under section 12(3) of the Dentists Registration Ordinance (Cap.156), and the form for applying for enrolment as a Dental Hygenist under regulation 4 of the Ancillary Dental Workers (Dental Hygenists) Regulations are available for viewing and downloading at the following web sites :-

The Dental Library, a branch library of The University of Hong Kong Libraries was established in 1982. The Dental Library is the only library of its kind found in the HKSAR to provide study and research facilities for students and teaching staff of HKU's Faculty of Dentistry. The Library's collection and services are designed to support the Faculty's vision "To be the global leader in oral health sciences, education and professional care" and to be responsive to their information needs for teaching, learning and research.


The Dental Library, located on the 5th and 6th floors of the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, maintains up-to-date resources in oral health sciences and is dedicated to delivering information to the library users. The Dental Library encourages interaction with the teaching staff and students of the Faculty of Dentistry in order to optimize its services in collection development, reference enquiry and library user's education programs.
