4worldlovers: Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ruby Yang has begun her tenure as the interim director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at HKU, from July 1, 2023.

"I am honoured by the appointment, and look forward to working with the faculty and staff to take the JMSC forward," said Yang, who also serves as Professor of Practice and head of the documentary film programme at the JMSC.


Professor Ming Wen, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, welcomed Yang to the leadership position.

“I am grateful to Ruby for taking time out from her creative work to accept the appointment,” she said. “The Faculty is proud that Ruby has been nurturing a new generation of expert storytellers, that is much needed in journalism and in every sector of our media-pervasive world. ”

Our alumni have made successful careers in a wide range of fields, including journalism, media, communication, and various other creative industries.

At JMSC, you get so many hands-on opportunities to master different multimedia skills like video reporting, photography, broadcasting, podcasting and data journalism. The faculty members are all very friendly and their doors are always open for students after class. I was able to learn and improve my skill sets in such a short period of time. The class discussions on the ethical dilemma journalists might face have also helped me make better decisions at work.

The master’s programme at HKU Journalism has been instrumental in my experience in starting out as an early-career journalist. As someone with very minimal experience in journalism before I started the programme, I was glad to be exposed to a broad range of skills which are increasingly important for reporters today – including video, digital, and data journalism.
